The new system will protect the Israeli towns, notably Sderot, which are adjacent to the Gaza Strip, Olmert told the weekly cabinet meeting Sunday.

He said that the Israeli government planned to build 14 schools and enhance the security of each house in the Negev area, in south Israel, under a modern system.

The system is based on a highly-effective early-warning device that will be installed in thousands of buildings in west Negev to protect them against the Palestinian missiles.

At its meeting, the Israeli cabinet set aside USD 98 million for the new defence system.
