Bhopal : Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and Congress leader Digvijay Singh Monday predicted early assembly polls in the state due to the worsening power situation and poor roads in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state.
“I feel that the BJP may hold assembly polls earlier in the state,” the All India Congress Committee general secretary told reporters here Monday on the opening day of the assembly’s budget session.
Citing his reasons, the former chief minister said that the poor power situation and pathetic condition of roads were the major issues. These, he said, would become worse by November.
“The road contracts are getting over by March 2008, and after the monsoon the condition of roads would be miserable,” he said.
In November, the power crisis would worsen due to the rabi crop season which requires more power. In view of this, the government may hold the polls in May rather than later in the year as scheduled to avoid facing the ire of people, he said.
On Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s support for the creation of a separate Bundelkhand state comprising parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, Singh said: “The Congress is in favour of a second States Reorganisation Commission and a request in this regard would soon be made to the central government.”
