Condoling the death of Paranjpe, who represented Thane since 1996 and died on Feb 20 in Mumbai, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said the Shiv Sena leader was an active politician and a social worker.

Reading out his condolence message on Hillary, Chatterjee said: “Sir Edmund is a household name in India, respected for his mountaineering achievements, contributions to the welfare of the people of Himalayas and conservation in the Himalayas.”

Hillary passed away on Jan 11 in New Zealand.

Remembering Murlidhar Devidas Amte, popularly known as Baba Amte, who died on Feb 9, the speaker said he was amongst the most “inspirational social activists of our times”.

“Baba Amte was a freedom fighter who dedicated his life to uphold the Gandhian philosophy. His selfless service was acknowledged the world over,” Chatterjee said.

The MPs, who also condoled the death of six other former MPs, observed a minute’s silence before adjourning the house for the day.
