Bhopal : A man has been arrested for killing a panther in Panna district of Madhya Pradesh, forest department officials said Monday.
The leopard had gone to drink water at a dam bordering Damoh district, about 100 km from Panna district headquarters, when it was shot dead.
“The body was first sighted by a forest guard Friday night on whose information the department staff reached the spot Saturday and seized it. The post mortem examination suggested death from gunshot injuries. A pellet was also removed from the body of the panther,” a forest department official said.
The forest department staff found a muzzle-loading gun from a field near the spot where the panther was killed and zeroed in on the owner of the weapon, identified as Pooran, a resident of Amdara village.
“During interrogation, Pooran confessed to have killed the panther saying that he fired in the dark and accidentally shot the panther”, said Chattarpur Circle Conservator of Forests V.K. Bisaria.
He has been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act.
