Melbourne : David Hussey is likely to find himself in a legal tangle as he is set to play in millionaire Indian Premiere League (IPL) by breaching his county cricket contract with Nottinghamshire.
IPL franchise Kolkata bought Hussey for $625,000 at the player auction in Mumbai last week – nearly twice the amount bid for his brother, Australian team regular Mike – because he was understood to be available for each of the potential 16 matches.
But taking up the offer would put Hussey in breach of his $400,000 two-year deal with Notts, who require him from early April.
According to The Age, it is believed Nottinghamshire was not notified of Hussey’s IPL plan and the county has taken legal advice.
IPL matches start on April 18 and run until early June, clashing with Nottinghamshire’s first five championship county matches.
Only one overseas player is allowed to appear for each county this year and with most of the top-class players around the world also signing with IPL, it could be too late for the county to find an equivalent player.
