New Delhi : The Supreme Court Wednesday restored the services of 5,500 Assam police constables who were recruited by the state in 2004 but thrown out of their jobs in 2006 on the Gauhati High Court order following charges of irregularity in their appointments.
A bench of Justice S.B. Sinha and Justice V.S. Sirpurkar set aside the high court ruling on a plea of the Assam government, which convinced it that there was no irregularity in the recruitment process.
Along with the state government, some of the successful candidates who had cleared the December 2004 recruitment process to join the Assam police constabulary had approached the apex court, challenging the Gauhati High Court’s December 2006 order.
The high court had set aside the appointments of the constables, saying their recruitment was illegal and irregular.
The militancy-hit Assam recruited the constables to deploy them in 11 of its 26 districts, facing the brunt of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).
