New Delhi: More than 15 years and more than 720 lakh rupees spent. But the commission is yet to submit its final report.

This is one-man Liberhan Commission formed in 1992 by former Prime Minister late P.V. Narsimha Rao to probe Babri Masjid demolition. The panel was asked to submit its report within three months of its constitution. It could not. And so it has since been granted 42 extensions.

Retd. Justice of Madras High Court M.S. Liberhan requested the Home Ministry to give further extension to submit its report. The panel has assured the ministry that it will surely submit its report on its five point term of reference.

It is not that every commission in the country takes decades to submit its report. MC Jain Commission appointed in August 1991 for probing Rajiv Gandhi assassination submitted its interim report in August 1997, Nanavati Commission for anti Sikh riot constituted in May 2000 and submitted its report in February 2005 and Sri Krishna Commission probed 1993 Mumbai bomb blast and submitted its report in five years.

The Union government seems to have been caught in a catch 22 situation. If it denies the extension, the commission would be packed without presenting its final report. If it gives permission, it would be seen as another extension to the commission.
