Kuala Lumpur : Malaysia has signed an agreement with the US to prevent smuggling of nuclear and radiological materials through the global maritime routes, a media report said Thursday.
The Megaport Initiative agreement was signed Wednesday by director-general Abdul Rahman Abdul Hamid of Malaysia Customs and US ambassador James Keith in Port Klang in central Selangor state.
Malaysia has become the 29th country to sign the Megaport Initiative, under which the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) would install radiation-detection equipment at Port Klang and Port Tanjung Pelepas in southern Johor state.
The equipment would be handled by the Customs staff, who will be trained by NNSA, the New Straits Times said.
The agreement is part of efforts to prevent nuclear materials from being smuggled into the US.
“It was vital to work together to ensure the safety of the two nations with the expansion of trade,” Keith was quoted as saying.
