Mumbai : Nine people were killed and as many injured Friday when the jeep they were travelling in collided with a truck at Nashik in Maharashtra.
“All the passengers in the jeep were killed after the truck driver lost control of his vehicle and hti the jeep,” Nikhil Gupta, superintendent of police (Nashik), told IANS.
The accident took place on the Mumbai-Agra highway, around 300 km from here.
Among the victims are three women and three children, all residents of Nashik, Gupta said.
The police have identified six of the victims: Lakshman Tajne (28), Sunita Bondve (24), Aditya Bondve (6), Anjana Bhaskar (45), Pandurang Shinde (40) and Sagir Ahmed Ali (24).
The nine injured have been rushed to hospitals in the city and are said to be critical, Gupta said. Efforts were on to identify the other victims, he added.
Gupta said the truck driver hasbeen arrested and charged with rash and negligent driving.
