Davenport reaches New Zealand quarterfinals

Auckland : Three-time Grand Slam winner Lindsay Davenport continued the charge through her tennis comeback reaching her third quarter-final in as many events with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 defeat of Annabel Medina Garrigues at the ASB Classic here Wednesday.

The victory improved the new mother’s record in singles since returning to tennis to 15-1, which includes titles in Bali and Quebec. She also reached the semi-finals in Beijing last September.

Davenport decided to test the waters of her sport again just three months after giving birth to her first child in June.

“I had a bit of a lapse in the second set,” said the 31-year-old American. “I did really well in the first and third sets.

“It will take a few more matches to figure out. But overall I played two good sets. I’ll get better with each match I play.”

In other second-round matches, Austrian teenager sixth seed Tamira Paszek beat Camille Pin of France 6-2, 6-3 while French youngster Aravane Rezai eliminated Greek seventh seed Eleni Daniilidou 7-5, 6-4.

New Zealand put a player into the last eight as Marina Erakovic got past American Ashley Harkleroad 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
