Mumbai : The Mumbai police on the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day lived up to their reputation as strict enforcers of traffic discipline. By Tuesday morning, they had arrested as many as 338 revellers for drunken driving.
Depending on the seriousness of the offences, the arrested stand to be handed down heavy fines or detentions in jail ranging from a day to one month, Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic) Vijay Kamble told IANS Tuesday.
Kamble said the offenders were caught during a special drive against drunken and rash driving the traffic police undertook for New Year.
In 2007, the police registered a whopping 12,528 cases against inebriated drivers.
In addition, the driving licences of 2798 offenders have been suspended, for a period ranging from six months to one year. The fines slapped on them totalled to Rs. 20 million.
Apart from these cases, the police have also registered 27,571 cases for other offences like rash driving, not fastening seat belts, driving without tail lights, illegal parking by cabs, using banned varieties of horns, the officer said.
