Beirut : Lebanon’s Islamic militant group leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah has warned that the opposition led by them would take decisive measures against the government for “violations” in the country’s politics.
The Hezbollah-led opposition will not be silent towards “the violations of the government”, Nasrallah said Wednesday in an interview on Lebanese National Broadcasting Network (NBN TV). The interview was also shown on Hezbollah controlled TV station Al-Manar.
Nasrallah said that there would be meetings and consultations within 10 days on decisive measures against the “violations of the government”.
He, meanwhile, expressed Hezbollah’s readiness to discuss its arms in the framework of a national unity government, and national defence strategy.
Lebanese ruling coalition and the Hezbollah-led opposition have been separated by a wide chasm since six ministers resigned from Prime Minister Fouad Seniora’s government in November 2006.
Since then, the opposition does not acknowledge the legality of the government, which does not include Shia ministers, claiming it violates the constitutional demand of “coexistence among Lebanese sects”.
Lebanon has a special political system known as “confessionalism” meant for keeping religious harmony intact in the country. Under the system, the 128 parliamentary seats are equally divided between both sections of Muslims and Christians.
But the country has been witnessing a political turmoil for more than a year because of the power struggle between anti-Syrian politicians, who hold a slim majority in parliament and support the Western-backed government of Prime Minister Fuad Saniora, and the opposition led by the Shia militant group Hezbollah, which is supported by Syria and Iran.
