“Around 500 Maoist rebels attacked Bansjore police station in Simdega district at around 1 a.m. Wednesday, injuring six policemen,” said Gauri Shankar Rath, additional director of police.

“The injured policemen were admitted to a hospital in Rourkela, where one succumbed to his injuries,” Rath said.

Additional security forces have been sent to Simdega to look for the attackers – suspected to be members of the Communist Party India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) – who fled to nearby forests after the attack in Bansjore, some 160 km from the state capital.

Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the 24 districts of Jharkhand. Nearly 1,000 people, mostly police and paramilitary personnel, have been killed in the last seven years since the state was carved out of Bihar.
