An official spokesman said the decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad Thursday.

“The proposed 200-bed institute is a part of upgradation programme for the two medical college hospitals at Srinagar and Jammu to the (Delhi based) AIIMS level,” the spokesman said here. A design of the project was also presented to the chief minister.

There are no official records on how many trauma patients the hospitals in the state get every year, but the officials say the number is considerable.

Kashmir is reeling under separatist violence for nearly two decades, which has left numerous trauma patients all across the state.

When militancy erupted in Kashmir in 1989, the hospitals here were ill equipped to deal with trauma patients.

Now, the government has proposed to set up the first specialised institute to deal with the situation.

The spokesman did not specify that how soon this institute would come up. The project design is ready and the chief minister has asked for certain changes, once those are done, the project will take off, the spokesman added.
