Egypt welcomes Arab foreign ministers agreement on solution to Lebanese crisis

Cairo : Egypt on Sunday hailed an Arab foreign ministers agreement on a solution to the Lebanese crisis, Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said in a statement.

In the press statement received by Xinhua, Abul Gheit noted that the Arab foreign ministers consultative meeting held on Saturday evening achieved its goal to help the Lebanese disputing political parties to reach an agreement over Lebanese president.

The talks with the participation of Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa expressed the goodwill of all parties concerned to solve the current political crisis and realize security in Lebanon, the Egyptian top diplomat added.

Arab foreign ministers on Saturday evening called for a swift consensus on Lebanese presidential election to choose army chief General Michel Suleiman as president.

The Arab diplomats agreed on an overall plan to solve the Lebanese crisis, calling on all parties in Lebanon to reach an immediate agreement on forming a national unity government in line with the constitution.

The consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Saturday evening was aimed to prepare for Sunday’s extraordinary meeting of the Arab League Council at the foreign ministers’ level to tackle the Lebanese political crisis, developments in the Palestinian territories and Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.
