He told reporters, following a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, that the Lebanese constitution provided for electing a president without any interference.

But, he dismissed speculation that the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting held here on Sunday could be meant to garner Arab support for a simple majority backing for army chief Gen. Michel Suleiman as a new Lebanese president.

The meeting aims to help Lebanon return to the political constitutional process as soon as possible and maintain its security and stability, he said.

For his part, the Egyptian foreign minister said Egypt had called for an extraordinary meeting of the Arab foreign ministers with a view to averting any further worsening situation in Lebanon.

He stressed the importance of choosing a new Lebanese president as a maximum necessity required by the fragile situation in the country.

Afterwards, deliberations and discussions can be held to discuss several issues that concern Lebanese politicians.

He hoped that the meeting would come up with positions that could support and help the Lebanese wriggle out of their thorny distress.
