Tbilisi : Former Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili was leading in the country’s presidential elections with more than 50 percent of votes leaving united opposition candidate Levan Gachechiladze far behind, the central election commission said Sunday.
With results available from 229 out of 3,512, polling stations, Saakashvili gained 57.58 percent of votes while his opponent Gachechiladze polled only 22.56 percent votes, the election commission said.
Businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili got about 6 percent of votes, while Labour Party leader Shalva Natelashvili won 4.3 percent, New Rightist leader David Gamkrelidze polled 3.5 percent, and others could not manage to get more than 1 percent of the counted votes.
Meanwhile, the opposition said that the vote was rigged.
