It has been named Amrita MiTrans.

In a press statement issued here Tuesday, ARL, the research and development division of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham attached to the Amritananda Mayi Mutt near Kollam, 70 km from here, said more than a dozen engineers and researchers developed this revolutionary technology, which combines the latest advancements in computers and wireless telecommunications.

Amrita MiTrans can support a wide variety of applications such as fleet scheduling, location tracking and delivery of education and entertainment in public and private vehicles.

“This will benefit state transportation corporations, private bus owners, railways, metro systems, rental car owners, truck companies, and other businesses through revenue generation, increased efficiencies in fleet operations, cost reductions and improved customer satisfaction,” said the release.

Amrita MiTrans allows companies to deliver customised information and entertainment in moving vehicles, greatly enhancing the travel experience of passengers.

Passengers can watch advertisements and multimedia content while travelling. Among several other benefits, bus operators can provide arrival and departure times to passengers in transit.

Companies will be able to track vehicle arrival and departure times without depending on the global positioning system (GPS), capture information on vehicle diagnostics, and deliver text messages or audio announcements, along with a host of other potential applications.

This project was funded by TIFAC (Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council), a registered society under the Department of Science and Technology of the government.

ARL has already filed for a patent for the product. The solution will be showcased at Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi later this week.
