Shimla : Power cuts, unheard of in the power-surplus hill state of Himachal Pradesh, have come into force this week due to shortage from the northern grid.

State capital Shimla awoke to a freezing morning for the second consecutive day Tuesday. People were not able to heat up their homes or use geysers and other electrical appliances.

The power cuts lasted for at least 45 minutes.

Although power cuts are usual across much of India, they are unheard of in Himachal Pradesh. The entire hill state achieved 100 percent electrification almost two decades ago.

The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) has started 25 percent power cuts, as the state is not getting the required power from the northern grid.

The state needs 18.5 million units but is getting only 14 million units.

Last week, the state government asked the Chhattisgarh government for electricity to tide over the power shortage.
