AFMI delegation visits Agra educational institutions

Agra: A delegation consisting of 30 NRIs led by the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin visited educational institutions in the densely populated Muslim localities of Agra to encourage the students to excel and to ascertain the needs of the schools.

The group comprising of NRIs of all ages from USA, Canada, and the UK visited the Ahmed Hanafia High School, Inter College and the Anwari Neelofer Girls Inter College in Dholi Khar, Sadar Bhatti area of Agra. The combine strength of the schools and colleges is around 1500.

The delegation asessed the needs of the schools and the college and collected information on possible future cooperation. The A.H. Inter College has an interesting history. It was founded by the Quraishi community in 1889 as a Madrassa where the Dars-e-Nizami syllabus was followed. Later on it was converted into a primary school and a high school in 1953. The first arts and commerce board exams were held in 1954. In the year 1960, the school began offering courses in Science and Biology. In 1966 the school attained the status of a full fledged intermediate college.

The building for the girl’s college was donated by businessman and freedom fighter late Sirajuddin Azad. His family, led by Mr. Zulfiqar Quraishi, still contributes a major part of the operating budget.

The students of the above mentioned institutions organized a cultural program for the visiting delegation. High scoring students later received awards and medals. Mr. Ali Quraishi, incoming AFMI president, Dr. Shakir Mukhi, and Dr. A.S. Nakadar spoke on the occasion.
