Nine killed in Argentina truck-bus collision

Buenos Aires : At least nine people have been killed when a truck hit a bus in Argentina’s San Juan province, Spanish news agency EFE reported Thursday.

With this, the toll in road accidents in the country rises to 59 this year.

The collision occurred Wednesday in Pocitos town in San Juan province, around 1,200 km northwest of Buenos Aires. Two children and a pregnant woman were among the fatalities. Several people were also seriously injured, the police said.

“We’re trying to determine how it happened and it won’t be easy. There was a fuel spill and the truck was destroyed,” Miguel Gonzalez, a police officer, told reporters.

On Monday and Tuesday, 13 people were killed in vehicle collisions on roads leading to Argentina’s beaches and resorts.

The Research and Road Safety Centre here said 50 people were killed and 80 injured in 33 accidents nationwide. The figures do not include those killed and injured in Pocitos.

A total of 8,104 people were killed in vehicular accidents in Argentina last year.
