Robert, who spent four seasons at Newcastle United, has been without a club since leaving Spanish side Levante in November.

The 32-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the season. Derby also received international clearance for striker Emanuel Villa, an Argentine with Spanish citizenship.

Midfielders Robbie Savage and Hossam Ghaly also look to be on their way to Pride Park, while manager Paul Jewell claimed to be close to bringing in a goalkeeper with Stephen Bywater and Lewis Price both injured.

A fee has been agreed upon with Blackburn Rovers for Savage, while Ghaly, out of favour at Tottenham, has withdrawn from the African Cup of Nations as he looks to secure a move.

“Everything you see here at the training ground is professional,” Robert said. “I am very happy because I signed this morning and for my head that is fantastic.

“I don’t know the city but my family are coming over this Friday and I’m very happy to be back in England with Derby. The club’s position here is a bit difficult but I’m here to put my experience in and work hard – that’s it.”

Derby are 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
