Beirut : Reacting to the roadside bomb attack against Irish peacekeepers in south Lebanon earlier Tuesday, acting commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Brig-Genl Jai Prakash Nehra said the incident would not affect the role of UN peacekeepers in the country.
The UNIFIL will continue to discharge its duty in maintaining peace and security in south Lebanon, Nahra asserted.
The attack against the Irish contingent on the Beirut-Sidon highway in the Shouf village, Rumeileh, aimed to undermine the joint efforts being made by the UNIFIL and the Lebanese army to stabilise the situation in south Lebanon, he disclosed.
The UN peacekeepers will continue their role and the joint operation with the Lebanese army, he pledged.
Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad al-Siniora, now on a visit to the United Arab Emirates, condemned the attack as “a crime against stability and security in Lebanon.”
In a phone call with UNIFIL Commander Claudio Graziano, al-Siniora reaffirmed commitment to cooperation with the peacemakers.
