Chennai : The British Council, Britain’s cultural and educational relations organisation, has announced a climate change competition for Indian students. Three winners of the competition will represent India in international competitions to be held in March and May.
Children between 16 and 18 years are eligible to participate in the competition titled “The Indian Climate Champion 2008” in which 20 young Indians will be selected as ambassadors for mitigating the harmful effects of climate change, the British Council said in a statement here.
Out of the 20, three will be selected to participate in the “International Climate Champions 2008” meet and represent India at meetings in London and Kobe, Japan, when environment ministers from the Group of Eight (G8) industrialised nations plus five other countries will be meeting to discuss climate change.
The competition is part of the British Council’s International Climate Champions Programme aimed at achieving a range of medium and long-term climate change objectives.
The young climate ambassadors’ terms in office will conclude in August 2009.
They will develop a plan to make people aware about the dangers of climate change in their hometown. They will also start an eco project or talk to important people in their community about bigger plans to spread the message about the dangers of climate change.
British Council has invited young people across India to participate in the competition. The last date for applying is Feb 4. All information regarding participation is available on the council’s website.
