“Considering all aspects, the government has taken the decision last week to lift the ban on export of hilsa fish to India,” said Monir Ahmed, first secretary and head of mission of Bangladesh visa office here.

Fish traders here expect that supply of the tropical fish from Bangladesh would resume soon.

“The silver fish of Padma and Meghna rivers in Bangladesh has already hit the markets in Kolkata and southern Assam three days back,” the traders said.

Dhaka stopped export of hilsa fish to India in an attempt to meet the local demand at a reasonable price.

The Bangladeshi hilsa from the river Padma and Meghna is a highly priced commodity, much in demand in West Bengal, Assam and Tripura.

Bangladesh has been exporting hilsa fish to about 12 countries, with India accounting for more than 60 percent of the exports.

A kilogram of hilsa was sold at Rs.250 to Rs 300 prior to the ban.
