The attention of the media as well as the ordinary people were focused on Bangabhaban as President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at that time was the apparent centre of the state power as he was holding the post of the chief advisor simultaneously.

Amidst heightened political tension the country was rapidly heading towards uncertainty as most of the parties announced to boycott the postponed general elections slated for Jan 22 saying it was set to be rigged with a “fake voters list” and administrative manipulation.

On the contrary, the then government and the election commission was hell-bent to stage the polls at any cost sounding a strong note of warning against those who would oppose the elections.

As per the programme of the day, the president held a meeting of the advisory committee on law and order in the morning while he was scheduled to chair an emergency meeting of the advisory council later on the day.

A Bangabhaban spokesman briefed the press about the decision of the law and order committee meeting saying stringent measures would be taken against any attempt to frustrate the general elections of Jan 22.

The advisory council members were waiting in Bangabhaban to join the cabinet meeting while a large number of newsmen waited outside the main entrance of Bangabhaban to report the outcome of the advisers meeting.

But before the start of the cabinet meeting, the three chiefs of the armed forces held an unscheduled meeting with the president that yielded the proclamation of emergency by the president in the evening and allowed the nation to heave a sigh of relief.

The advisory council members went back home as the scheduled cabinet meeting was postponed.

The installation of the current government with crucial military support is thus remained as a remarkable transition phase for the nation also earning the international appreciation.
