Pyongyang : The nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula can only be settled if the United States has the will to seek peaceful coexistence with the North Korea, the country’s leading official newspaper Rodong Sinmun said Saturday.
“The nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is no more than a product of the deep-rooted hostile US policy toward the North Korea,” it said.
“The extremely hostile policy pursued by the US conservative hard-liners toward the DPRK has pushed the situation to the brink of war,” the paper added.
“At present, talks on the nuclear issue are going on between North Korea and the US. Both sides will benefit from the establishment of mutual trust and normalization of bilateral relations.”
The newspaper also urged the US to fulfil its duty of maintaining peace on the Peninsula by signing a peace treaty with the North Korea to replace the current non-aggression pact, known as the Korean Armistice Agreement, in place for the last 50 years.
The divided Korean Peninsula technically remains in a state of war after the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce instead of a peace treaty.
