“A man threw a grenade near a police station in Guwahati, injuring 15 people, including a paramilitary personnel,” a police spokesman told IANS.

No one has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack but the police believe rebels of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were behind the attack.

The injured were rushed to hospitals in the city.

“We had information that the ULFA is planning strikes across the state to try and disrupt Republic Day celebrations,” the police spokesman said.

It has been routine for the ULFA, fighting for an independent homeland, to step up violence ahead of the national days.

On Friday, four railway workers were injured in a similar grenade attack in the eastern Dibrugarh district.
