Virk, who was the director general of police (DGP) under the Congress government led by Amarinder Singh, is at present on bail after the Punjab Police arrested him two months ago in corruption and disproportionate assets cases.

“His health is being closely observed. His heart beat was nearly double the normal,” doctors at the PGIMER said.

Punjab vigilance officials arrested Virk November last year after registering corruption and other cases against him. A widow had alleged that Virk and a Chandigarh-based property dealer had duped her of five acres of prime land near Kharar town in Punjab, 20 km from Chandigarh.

The land in question has a market value running into several millions of rupees.

The transaction took place when Virk was serving as DGP.

However, the Punjab vigilance could never question him as he remained admitted to PGIMER for nearly three weeks after his arrest owing to poor health.

Virk, who is a Maharashtra cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was placed under suspension when the Parkash Singh Badal-led Akali Dal government assumed office in Punjab last year. He was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court last month.
