Islamabad : The Scotland Yard team probing the murder of Pakistan’s former prime minister Benazir Bhutto is facing “lots of difficulties” in the investigation owing to the lack of evidence at the assassination site.
There are speculations regarding any “headway” made by the foreign experts in the case, “but generally it is believed that the Scotland Yard team is facing a lot of difficulties because the crime scene was washed away”, said The News Monday.
“There is hardly any meaningful evidence available to them to make the basis of their investigations,” said the newspaper.
Quoting police sources, The News said the joint team of Pakistan police and Britain’s Scotland Yard experts are still “entangled in the crime scene” and are unable to grab any lead that may guide them.
Meanwhile, three new experts from the Scotland Yard have arrived in Rawalpindi, where they joined the investigations. The experts, who joined the team that arrived Jan 4, are said to be photography specialists.
On Sunday, they took 3-D snaps of the crime scene in Rawalpindi, where Bhutto was killed in a gun and bomb attack at the Dec 27 rally of her Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), The News reported.
After a detailed inspection of the crime scene the team visited the Rawalpindi General Hospital (RGH), where Bhutto was taken after the blast, and inspected the operation theatre, the emergency ward and the room where she was kept after being pronounced dead by the doctors.
They also had a meeting with the doctors who attended Bhutto after she was brought to the hospital and discussed various details mentioned in the medical reports and the X-rays of the slain PPP chairperson taken after she was attacked.
However, the foreign investigators remain strictly inaccessible to the media, The News said.
They have not started interviewing witnesses as yet and, though they intend to contact the leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), especially those who were accompanying Benazir Bhutto at the time of the tragic incident, they have not made any such move yet.
Scotland Yard team members also arranged a demonstration of Benazir’s vehicle to assess the actual situation under which she was attacked.
The team, through vehicle’s demonstration, worked out to assess the situation, and the distance between the vehicle and the attackers.
They also visited District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) where, in the mortuary, they examined the parts of an unidentified body, the victim of bomb blast and made a video footage.
