Cairo : Egypt and Turkey on Tuesday called for a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear standoff, warning against the use of force, the Egyptian official MENA news agency reported.
At a joint press conference with visiting Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said details on the Iranian nuclear file are not available when commenting on U.S. President George W. Bush’s remarks that Iran’s nuclear program was posing a threat to the region.
If the Iranian nuclear file is posing a threat it should be dealt with in a peaceful way and there is no need for using force, which will thus result in dire consequences for the region and the world at large, said Mubarak.
For his part, Gul said problems among countries should be settled by diplomatic means.
Turkey supports the peaceful use of nuclear power and opposes weapons of mass destruction, Gul added.
In a policy speech delivered Sunday afternoon in the United Arab Emirates, Bush said “Iran is today the world’s leading state sponsor of terror.”
The United States has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran denied the accusation and insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
After more than four years of investigation, the International Atomic Energy Agency still cannot decide whether Tehran’s nuclear program was just for peaceful purposes or not.
