She warned against imposing “political pressure” on the Frankfurt-based ECB.

Merkel stressed her “very critical” view over the planned meeting of the heads of states from eurozone member states.

The top politician pointed out that a main responsibility of the ECB was to uphold price stability in the 15-member euro zone.

Referring to the present strength of the euro, Merkel said it was a sign of the “European Union’s economic power”.

She cautioned also against instrumentalizing the euro for elections purposes, alluding to what French President Nicolas Sarkozy did during his presidential run.

Meanwhile, Merkel voiced “great sensibility” with regards to having transparent financial markets.

The chancellor urged “additional regulations to develop more transparency on the financial markets.”

Germany, Britain and France have reportedly spearheaded efforts for greater transparency on the world’s financial markets.
