Police and immigration officials found the men working at Natsons Midland Packaging on the Dalby Trading Estate at Old Dalby, near Melton in Leicester. Many of them were being well below the national minimum wage.

A spokesman for the company denied that illegal immigrants were being paid below the national minimum wage and added that it welcomed any investigation.

Reports from Leicester said that the police with sniffer dogs found 14 of the illegal immigrants hiding behind pallets at the factory.

Gail Adams, Border and Immigration Agency regional director, told the local media in Leicester: “Our officers will now work tirelessly over the next few days to send them back to their home countries as soon as possible.”

Immigration officers, acting on intelligence, detained the men, six from India and six from Afghanistan. Three others were found to have come from Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Some of those arrested had entered the UK illegally while others had overstayed their visas. Thirty workers were questioned by police and immigration officers.

Leicestershire police then sent in a specialist team of officers and dogs to search for any remaining workers and 14 were found hiding in the factory. Another man was arrested following interviews with the workers.
