7 Pakistani soldiers, 40 militants killed in clashes: Army

Islamabad : Pakistan army said on Wednesday that 7 soldiers and 40 militants were killed in clashes erupted late Tuesday night in the troubled South Waziristan tribal region.

Over 400 militants launched attack on a camp of security forces at Sararogha area of Waziristan, which led to clashes between the two sides, army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said.

Abbas told reporters that more than 25 troops had been missing after the militants fired rockets and later overran a camp of security forces.

He said that the militants launched the attack at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, adding that 15 soldiers had left the fort and shifted to safe place.

Abbas said that he does not aware of the situation of the fort but added that there is no soldier now in the fort.

State-run television reported that the militants first exploded one wall of the fort and then entered the building.

Correspondents in the region quoted local officials as saying that Pakistani Taliban captured the security forces fort and killed around 30 soldiers.

The army did not confirm death of 30 soldiers.

Local correspondents in Wana said that around 1,000 armed Taliban took control of the fort at Sararogha area and also held hostage 10 soldiers.

They said that security forces also launched counter attack and used artillery and mortars.

Locals said that they heard exchange of fire for around four hours but later the forces stopped firing and Taliban entered the fort and also shifted weapons from the fort.
