Islamabad : Senator Asif Ali Zardari, Co-Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party, on Wednesday sent a formal request to the United Nations to set up a commission to investigate the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
“The letter signed by Co-Chairman of the PPP Asif Ali Zardari was sent directly to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon Wednesday as the government refused to forward it to the UN despite our plea,” a PPP spokesman said in a statement.
The spokesman said the PPP co-chairman’s letter “makes out a case for investigations by a United Nations Commission, recalling the concern shown by the Security Council soon after the first bomb attack on Bhutto’s rally in Karachi on Oct 18 that killed 179 people and injured over 600.”
The Security Council in a resolution had underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of the Karachi bomb attack to justice. It had urged all States to cooperate actively with the Pakistani authorities in this regard.
Copies of the letter have also been sent to the representatives of five permanent member states of the Security Council, the spokesman said.
The letter gives details of the events that led to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto and her apprehensions about security especially with reference to October 18 bomb attacks.
It also cites supporting evidence that the spokesman said “makes it necessary to set up an independent international investigative commission under the auspices of the Security Council, named Ms. Benazir Bhutto Inquiry Commission.”
