Captain Kumble, who captured two wickets in Australia’s first innings on the second day of the match, broke the record of Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who had caught batsmen 31 times of his bowling.

Kumble earlier in the day had become only the third bowler after Muralitharan and retired Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne to take 600 wickets.

Kumble’s became the second fastest to 600 in Test annals, after Muralitharan, who required 101 matches to get there. Warne, on the other hand, had taken 124 Tests to 600.

Only Muralitharan (734 wickets in 118 Tests) and Shane Warne (708 in 145) are ahead of Kumble in the wicket-takers’ list.

After having danger man Andrew Symonds (66) caught by his Bangalore city mate Rahul Dravid at slip, Kumble threw his hands up in the air in celebration and waved at the crowd with the ball in his hand.
