Hyderabad : The opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu Thursday promised to supply free electricity to farmers if the party is voted to power in Andhra Pradesh.
The pro-reforms leader, who had always opposed free electricity to farmers, took a u-turn to promise nine hours of free power supply to farmers every day.
Going a step forward, Naidu said his government would also bring down the electricity tariff for the domestic sector. He was addressing a meeting at TDP office here.
Naidu, who lost power in 2004 elections, had made fun of the similar promise of the Congress party in the last polls, saying if the promise was implemented the electric wires would be used to dry clothes, as there would be no electricity to run in the wires.
The promise brought the Congress party to power in the state, ending the nine-year rule of Naidu. Elections to the state assembly are scheduled for next year.
The opposition leader alleged that the Congress party has failed to implement its promise of seven hours of free power supply to farmers.
