Hyderabad : A sword of the Nizam, the ruler of the erstwhile Hyderabad State, has been stolen from the Andhra Pradesh State Museum.
Authorities noticed the theft when the museum opened Thursday morning, and informed the police.
The museum is located in the Public Garden in the heart of the city and near the city police control room and the office of the director general of state police.
The museum authorities said a few antiques, including the sword, were stolen. However, they did not reveal details.
They informed Hyderabad Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh of the robbery.
The police have registered a case and a team of policemen visited the museum to gather clues.
Earlier known as the Hyderabad museum, it is the oldest museum in the state.
Built in 1928 by the eighth Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, to preserve the cultural heritage of his state, the museum is one of the richest repositories of antiques and art objects in the country.
The museum has galleries devoted to stone sculptures, bronzes, weapons, arms and armoury, copies of Ajanta caves’ murals, manuscripts, textiles, Bidri ware, coins, modern paintings and miniatures.
