Damascus : Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa here termed as “important” his talks he held in Lebanon Thursday between the majority and so-called loyalists.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in Damascus by car from Beirut Friday, Moussa said they agreed in Lebanon following the four-hour meeting to meet again when he returns from Damascus Saturday evening.
Moussa said the atmosphere of the meeting was “very practical” and noted that further discussions would narrow the gaps.
He said the Arab League was not providing assurances to the conflicting parties in Lebanon, and these assurances were between the parties concerned themselves.
Moussa warned against vagueness in dealing with the Lebanese presidential issue.
“We are talking about a government of national unity” which should be reached by a compromise between the majority and opposition, he said.
Moussa acknowledged “a severe lack of confidence between both parties” in Lebanese, but declined to elaborate.
However, he added, the solution was possible if parties concerned showed goodwill based on national interest.
Moussa said all Arab countries were backing a three-phase plan to address the Lebanese presidential standoff.
The Arab League chief said his upcoming visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was not determined yet.
He said Lebanese was in dire need of the support of all Arab countries.
Moussa will meet President Bashar Al-Assad, vice-president Farouk Al-Shara and foreign minister Waleed Al-Muallem.
