The air raid was staged shortly after the government ended the cease-fire agreed with the LTTE on February 23, 2002, frequently violated by both parties for the last five years.

According to the Defense ministry report, the Sri Lankan air force jets attacked a meeting of Tamil rebel leaders near the city of Killinochchi.

The pilots confirmed total destruction, emphasized the war report.

TamilNet on line notified that air force jets attacked a mechanic workshop in a residential area four times, in which seven civilians resulted wounded and tens of houses were destroyed in an area controlled by the rebels.

The on line rebel daily reported that the LTTE responded to those air strikes with antiaircraft weapons.

Defense officials also reported the deaths of seven rebels in several clashes with the army in the northern districts of Jaffna, Mannar and Welioya.
