That garrison, defended by 42 national guardspeople in the Pakistani tribal zone, was attacked and occupied on Wednesday by about 400 religious rebels armed with rocket launchers and automatic rifles.

According to a dispatch, 40 attackers and seven soldiers died in the fighting, 20 are missing and 15 others surrendered.

The religious members of the militia were removed from the bastion they occupied and went to the high hills of Afghanistan bordering area, said the army’s spokesman, major general Athar Abbas.

About 90,000 Pakistani soldiers are deployed in northern and southern Warizistan to keep order and security in those bordering territories dwelled by ethnic tribes

Confrontations became stronger between rebels and the army since President Musharraf ordered to attack Islamabad Red Mosque on July 12, where thousands of religious soldiers were entrenched, killing over 100.
