Raipur : Police in Chhattisgarh have recovered eight bags containing 91 country-made pistols and 26 wireless sets from a busy square in this state capital, officials said Tuesday.
“Two car-borne people, including a woman, dropped eight weapons laden bags at a busy square in Dangania area of Raipur Monday night.
“We have seized the weapons and the state’s border has been sealed off. Police officials across the state have been alerted to track down the people who dropped off the bags,” Inspector General of Police Girdhari Nayak told IANS:
“These are travelling bags and it seems like the arms were dropped for a certain person for the purpose of terrorism, but police recovered the arms before they were taken away,” he added.
Bundles of batteries for wireless sets were also found in the bags.
“We have information that arms were kept in 12 bags and just eight bags were dropped in Raipur. Four bags are still inside the car and we are doing our best to track the movement of the car and arrest the people who were clearly carrying the arms for executing an act of terror, probably on Jan 26,” a police official said.
Police sources said Maoist guerrillas might be planning a terrorist attack ahead of Republic Day.
Cadres of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) are active in Chhattisgarh and have been running a parallel government for decades in the state’s vast forested mineral rich interior areas.
