Football fever can trigger heart attack: 2006 World Cup study

Berlin, Jan 22, IRNA, Emotional stress during football games can lead to irregular heart beats or even heart attacks among football fans, a medical study released Tuesday by a Munich-based university clinic said.

Evaluating the emergency protocols of 24 stations of emergency doctors in the greater Munich area during the 2006 World Cup, the university said that based on available statistics, there was a heightened risk of irregular heart rhythm and heart attacks among avid football fans.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany was a good opportunity to examine whether there was an increase of heart complaints, the clinic added.

Titled ‘More heart attacks during the 2006 World Cup’, the study will be unveiled in Munich on January 31.
