Baghdad : Fifteen people at least were killed and 132 others were injured in a huge explosion which rocked the city of Mosul, north Iraq, Wednesday, the Multi-National Forces said in a statement Thursday.
The explosion occurred in one of the city’s buildings, causing the death of 15 Iraqi citizens, including three Iraqi Army soldiers, and injury to 132 others. Local Iraqi authorities are leading search and recovery efforts, the statement added.
The explosion happened as units of the Iraqi Army were raiding weapon depots in western Mosul.
Major General Mark P. Hertling, commanding general of the Multinational-North Division, said: “If the explosion would indicate anything, it would interpret Al-Qaeda’s willingness to risk the lives of civilians using their houses as weapon caches.”
Hertling vowed to spare no effort to support security forces in the rescue and relief operations and to help bring those behind the crime to justice.
