Davos : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf Thursday sought the support of developed states in helping poor countries fight against poverty, illiteracy and economic deprivation, being the major root causes of terrorism and extremism.
“This is how they can help the country like Pakistan to eliminate the root cause of terrorism and extremism,” President Musharraf said while addressing a special session of the annual meeting of World Economic Forum, which was attended by over 300 participants here.
The President underlined the need for world leaders to focus on redressing of problems being faced by underdeveloped countries, which was also an imperative to ensure peace and stability in the world.
He also responded to three questions put by plenary session’s moderator Dr Henry Kissinger, former US Secretary of State, which related to Pakistan’s political scenario, its role in war against terror and the country status as an emerging economy.
President Musharraf highlighted Pakistan’s pivotal role for peace and security in the region, adding that besides facing ups and downs, conflicts and global changes, Pakistan had shown resilience in the changing scenario.
He also stressed that Pakistan’s nuclear and strategic assets were for deterrence and self-defence.
Musharraf briefed participants about Pakistan’s rapid economy and recent developments in forthcoming election.
He participated in another panel discussion that focused on Middle East and South Asia. The other panellists included Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Chief advisor of Bangladesh and Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq.
President Musharraf highlighted the importance of rising conflicts and disputes, addressing the challenges of extremism and terrorism, pursuing sustainable economy and building institutions of good governance especially democratic institutions.
Referring to the challenges of terrorism and extremism, he stressed the importance of comprehensive strategy combining military action, administrative measures and political and socio-economic development.
He also participated in a separate panel discussion on the quest for peace and stability in Middle East and South Asia, and held a series of meetings with important business and political personalities.
President Musharraf also gave interviews to BBC and CNN televisions besides speaking to the representatives of international print media.
