Vaz tables motion supporting India on UN Security Council

London, Jan 24 (IANS) India-origin Labour MP Keith Vaz Thursday tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons in support of India receiving a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

Britain has often expressed its support for such a move. Prime Minister Gordon brown repeated Britain’s commitment to this during his visit to India this week.

Vaz told IANS: “India is one of the world’s emergent global powers and largest democracy. It is only right that India be given a seat at the United Nations Security Council to reflect its international position.

“I sincerely hope that India will be given a seat at the Security Council, and hope that this will occur before the end of 2008.

The Early Day Motion reads: “That this House congratulates the prime minister on a successful visit to India, believes that maintaining a strong relationship with India is of the utmost importance, welcomes the prime minister’s statement that the UK gives its support to India’s membership of the Security Council and calls on the government to take whatever steps necessary to make sure that it happens in 2008.”

Several MPs signed the motion.
