Stumper Gilchrist sets world record of most dismissals

Adelaide, Jan 25 (IANS) Australia’s wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist Friday set a world record of 414 dismissals, breaking the South African Mark Boucher’s mark with the catch of India captain Anil Kumble in the ongoing fourth Test here.

Gilchrist, playing his 96th Test, caught Kumble off fast bowler Mitchell Johnson to erase Boucher’s record. With this dismissal, Gilchrist’s tally reads 377 catches and 37 stumpings.

Earlier, Gilchrist had equalled Boucher’s record of 413 dismissals, comprising 394 catches and 19 stumpings in 109 Tests, by catching Harbhajan Singh off Andrew Symonds.

The world record could go back to Boucher as he is still playing. It promises to be an interesting tussle between the two stumpers from now on.

At the end of the second day of the Test here, left-handed Gilchrist has scored 5,556 runs at 47.89. He has hit 17 Test centuries and 26 half-centuries.
