Identified as Darim Sedgai, a statement from coalition forces’ Bagram base said the man was shot dead by assailants in the neighbouring Pakistan on January 16.

“Coalition forces confirmed that Darim Sedgai was killed by unknown gunmen in Pakistan on January 16,” said the statement, which said that the deceased was a commander of the powerful Haqqani group.

The group is presently led by Sirajuddin Haqqani, son of Taliban commander Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The statement did not mention the exact location of the killing of Sedgai. However, it is believed that he might be gunned down in the troubled tribal areas of Pakistan, where the militants criss-cross the 2,640 kilometres undefined border between the two countries.
