Foreign funds sold equities worth $2.45 bn in five days

New Delhi : In the midst of one of the worst turbulences in Indian stock markets during the week ended Friday, foreign funds were net sellers of equities worth a whopping $2.45 billion, latest data showed Saturday.

The 1,269 foreign institutional investors (FIIs) registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), with 3,760 sub-accounts, were net sellers on each of the five trading days of the week, data with the stock markets watchdog showed.

The largest net sale was on Thursday, when these funds pulled out $619.7 million, followed by $601.30 million Tuesday and $559 million Wednesday. At $336.2 million and $335 million, the net sales were comparatively lower on Monday and Friday.

The data showed that during January, these funds have sold net equities worth $2.8 billion, though their cumulative purchases as on Jan 26, since they were allowed entry into India 15 years ago, stands at $63.53 billion.

The 30-share Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) saw one of its wildest weekly fluctuations ever during the week ended Friday but managed to close with a largely moderated decline of 652.04 points or 3.43 percent.
