Heavy rain marred the official celebrations in Kolkata. The scheduled march past by students and display of tableaux was curtailed because of the inclement weather. Orissa, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura also received heavy to normal rainfall.

“We are expecting the depression to move away from Gangetic West Bengal from Sunday afternoon and the cloudy sky would clear up. But in the next 24 hours, there will be moderate rainfall in Kolkata and its adjoining districts causing a sharp drop in the minimum temperature,” Kolkata Regional Meteorological Centre Director G.C. Debnath told IANS Saturday afternoon.

He said the rainfall has been caused due to a disturbance over Jharkhand. He said it was a normal weather phenomenon during winter.

According to the weather office, the city registered a total rainfall of 28 mm Friday and the maximum temperature was 10 degrees below normal.

Frost and cold wave conditions are likely over most parts of north and northwestern India till Monday.

The lowest minimum temperature in the plains was minus 2 degrees Celsius at Sarsawa in Uttar Pradesh.

Following are the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Saturday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
